Root is a game of adventure and war where 2 to 4 (1 to 6 with the 'Riverfolk' expansion) players fight for control of a broad wilderness.
The nefarious Marquise de Cat has taken the great woodland, with the goal on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have united. This Alliance will look to strengthen its resources and overthrow the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance might enlist the assistance of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to navigate through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may support the Alliance’s hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to recall the great birds of prey who once ruled the woods.
Meanwhile, at the edge of the region, the prominent, squabbling Eyrie have found a new commander who they hope will lead their faction to continue their ancient birthright. The stage is set for a contest that will determine the fate of the great woodland. It is up to you to decide which group will ultimately take root.
Root represents the next step in our progress of asymmetric design. Like Vast: The Crystal Caverns, each player in Root has different capabilities and a different victory circumstance. Now, with the use of gorgeous, multi-use cards, a real asymmetric design has never been more attainable.
The Cats play a game of engine building and logistics while trying to police the great wilderness. By collecting Wood they are able to build workshops, lumber mills, and barracks. They win by making new buildings and crafts.
The Eyrie assemble their hawks to take back the Woods. They must take as much territory as possible and build roosts before they fall back into squabbling.
The Alliance lurks in the shadows, recruiting forces and formulating conspiracies. They begin steadily and build towards a dramatic late-game presence--but only if they can manage to keep the other players in line.
Meanwhile, the Vagabond plays all sides of the quarrel for their own gain, while hiding a mysterious mission. Explore the board, fight other factions, and work towards achieving your secret goal.
In Root, players push the narrative, and the differences between each role create an unique level of interaction and replayability.
